FIRST NAME, FIRST HEADLINER: PEARL JAM
Rock Werchter 2010 has kicked off. With a first name. And what a name it is! PEARL JAM. Rock as it is supposed to be. Straight-forward, animated and sincere. And most of all a very pleasant reunion. Pearl Jam make rock look like top-class sport, a Belgian newspaper wrote on August 31, 2006. The previous day, the American band had made a stunning impression with thir first-ever gig in Belgium. A couple of months after the Sportpaleis show in Antwerp, they performed in Werchter. After 15 years, the band had finally found the confluence of the Demer and Dijle rivers. Eddie Vedder and his band had been forced to cancel their show at the very last moment.. twice. In 1992, the young band was replaced by the at the time virtually unknown Smashing Pumpkins. 2000 saw the Roskilde drama in Denmark and Live stood in. So we are in for a warm reunion. Pearl Jam rank among the very best bands to see live on stage. And mentally, they seem to be stronger than ever. The new album “Backspacer” (2009) is a 36-minute bomb: not one note too many, furious and gripping. Clearly a liberated band. It is a wonderful thing when your debut, see “Ten” (1991), turns out to be a million seller and expectations run high. After all those years, there is nothing left to prove. Which makes everything is possible. It results in loads of fun. Pearl Jam comes up with a party album that has the energy of their debut and the benefits of 20 years of experience.
