Sunday night, Pearl Jam brought the 36th edition of Rock Werchter to a close. Once again, this has been a year of high historical value. Rock Werchter 2010 has been the hottest edition yet, beyond the shadow of a doubt. The meteorological high point was Friday July 1st. Sunday  night, Pearl Jam brought the 36th edition of Rock Werchter to a close. Once again, this has been a year of high historical value. Rock Werchter 2010 has been the hottest edition yet, beyond the shadow of a doubt. The meteorological high point was Friday July 2. This can be gauged by the high water consumption and, unfortunately, the activities of the emergency services. However, sometimes more is less: the treatments required were not of a serious nature.    Rock Werchter 2010 was also the most comfortable yet. The Shelter was an instant classic. The quiet zone near the Pyramid Marquee was a new meeting place/sanctuary etc. The site felt bigger, due to a couple of rearrangements and a minor expansion. The expansion of the supervised KBC bicycle parking facilities from 1 to 3 zones was also greatly appreciated.    Rock Werchter 2010 was attended by 320,000 visitors. The festival sold out four days in a row (80,000 visitors). Three quarters of those came from Belgium or the Netherlands, followed by the United Kingdom, France and Ireland. One runner-up worthy of mention is Australia in 8th place. Around 250 Aussies found their way to Werchter.   Rock Werchter 2010 was a fiery year. Green Day got the party going with beautiful, colourful bouquets. Rammstein displayed their mastery of pyrotechnics on Saturday. 1000 real bombs and shells. And of course, there was the traditional explosive finale on Sunday. P!nk’s trapeze work on Saturday was worthy of an individual nomination. She was the first artist in the history of the festival to bring her own crane.      More Werchter is a mere 4 days away. Also, the festival site is larger than in previous years, which increases the comfort of the festivalgoers considerably.   The services and authorities are well-prepared for these almost extreme weather conditions. The Red Cross had to treat a greater number of patients yesterday but these interventions were not particularly serious. Otherwise, everything is running calmly and smoothly at the Festival park and outside. Anyone who feels the need to take a dip or swim can do so in the lake at Domein Ter Heide in Rotselaar. However, swimming in the Demer en Dijle is prohibited. A few words of advice for those who have yet to reach Werchter. The car parks in zones B (Rotselaar) and C (Tremelo, Betekom) are as good as full. If you’re quick, you can still park on the side of zone A, accessible via Haacht. Of course, the best option is to use public transport. This is an initiative by the entire Belgian music industry. We support realistic legislation regarding the maximum permitted sound level. Because we want your ears to continue working properly, also after attending a concert or festival. In concrete terms: the maximum sound level is set at 103 dB, measured over 15 minutes at the mixing desk. We are aware of the risks of hearing damage caused by listening to excessively loud music or listening too long. As we use the best sound systems, the music that resounds from the speakers is not only of excellent quality but is also at an acceptable level. The sound levels at Werchter have already been subject to the above rule for a few years, and for the last three years we have handed out free earplugs to anyone who requires them. You can find peace and quiet in our chill-out area, at the rear of the festival park. However, we still recommend ear protection. If you want to give your ears a rest, you can obtain free earplugs from the merchandise stands, the Proximus stand and the stand of t‘ Oorhuis by Veranneman. Over 30,000 pairs of earplugs are distributed in this way, and the ‘t Oorhuis stand offers even more. This is the ideal place to find out how your hearing is and how to protect it through hearing tests and muffle measurements. They also sell ER20 earplugs at a friendly price. He was one of the founders of the band that put Belgian rock on the map. Nostalgically, we think back to the performance of GIRLS IN HAWAII at Rock Werchter in 2004. It was an extremely tasteful performance with above all a lot of character. Denis was a passionated drummer, and a warm, kind personality. It was him who gave the songs their beating heart. This means a big loss for the musical world in Belgium. Our thoughts go out to his family and numerous friends. In 2001, Sparklehorse played our Pyramid Marquee. A concert that is marked with a big header in our history book. Because it was so captivating and intensely beautiful. A Green-Day concert is one of those rare occasions where modern music comes really close to an overall experience. The three-piece are bursting with energy and joy of living and infect everyone who crosses their path. They play fast and loud which is not so hard to do when playing mainly three-minute songs in a festive wrapping, which always has a new surprise in store. They manage to amaze like the only the very best can. With a ten-year interval they skilfully reanimated punk music twice. No doubt Dookie (1994) which sold an amazing 15 million albums is the most successful American punk record of all time. It still is the top album of their choice. Somehow they managed to fade away in no time. American Idiot (2004) was a solid resurgence, though. The Who-inspired concept album about an anti-hero called Jesus of Suburbia is hailed by Q (the British magazine) as one of the best punk records ever. As was to be expected, the birth of ‘Liebe Ist Für Alle Da’ (2009) caused a lot of fuss. Back in Germany, the band's sixth album was barred from stores because of its offensive cover art and the S&M lyrics of ‘Ich Tu Dir Weh’. Okay, a line like ‘Needle, combination pliers, blunt saw. Make a wish, I don't say no’ is not exactly subtle. But people who do not get the wink, are definitely deaf, dumb and blind. The first one to be shocked by Rammstein, still has to raise his or her hand, though. The provocative lyrics, disguises, tonnes of fireworks, it is all meant to give the six-piece Tanzmetall band a strong identity. Rammstein never intended to copy foreign examples. That is why the lyrics tend to be in German, which has never been an impediment. ‘Liebe Ist Für Alle Da’ managed to enter the American charts at # 13. Since 2005, Rammstein have sold over 10 million albums world-wide. A couple of months after the Sportpaleis show in Antwerp, they performed in Werchter. After 15 years, the band had finally found the confluence of the Demer and Dijle rivers. Eddie Vedder and his band had been forced to cancel their show at the very last moment.. twice. In 1992, the young band was replaced by the at the time virtually unknown Smashing Pumpkins. 2000 saw the Roskilde drama in Denmark and Live stood in. So we are in for a warm reunion. Pearl Jam rank among the very best bands to see live on stage. And mentally, they seem to be stronger than ever. The new album “Backspacer” (2009) is a 36-minute bomb: not one note too many, furious and gripping. Clearly a liberated band.
