Triple J Unearthed is an online platform from Triple J, which you could think of as Australia’s version of FM station Studio Brussel. The aim is to discover and promote young talent. With over 200,000 tracks from around 100,000 artists, it’s a treasure trove of fresh sounds. It’s also where future Werchter stars like Flume, Gang of Youths, and Vance Joy were first discovered. Since 2008, Unearthed has hosted Unearthed High, an annual competition for high school students, and in 2022, Jacoténe took home the win with her track ‘I need therapy’. Her voice sounds like she’s lived a thousand lifetimes. Comparisons to Adele and Amy Winehouse come thick and fast, but Jacoténe takes them in stride. The Melbourne teen was raised on a musical diet of Aretha Franklin and Etta James, and she’s not about to settle for anything less than extraordinary.
