Cymande
The veterans of Rock Werchter 2025. The many-headed band was formed in South London back in 1971. Their name means ‘dove,’ and their lineup brought together musicians from across the Caribbean, creating a distinctive sound. A fusion of reggae, funk, soul, rock, calypso, and jazz, they coined their own term for it: 'nyah-rock'. Their influence is everywhere. Cymande helped lay the foundations for hip-hop, house, and garage, with their tracks sampled by legends like De La Soul, The Fugees, and Wu-Tang Clan. But the early days weren’t easy, especially in their home country of Britain. By 1974, they had already disbanded, but the continued love for their music brought them back together. Fast-forward to January this year, and the release of their fifth album - 'Renascence' - a record bursting with energy and sharp social commentary, proving that Cymande’s message is just as vital as ever.
